A virus, a worm, and Trojan horse walk in to a bar…

Not quite. But they can somehow find ways to walk into your computer.

What are they? What are their distinguishable differences from one another?

Let’s discuss the commonalities first. All three are kinds of malware (malicious software) and all three WILL disrupt one’s daily life and reap havoc on any one person lucky enough to encounter one or all three of them

Antivirus software does help in combating malware and while life may be restored happily because of it, it’s not a bad idea to know what each one is and what it does. That way the best antivirus software may be considered.

A virus is exactly what it sounds like. A virus. And it copies oneself and infects the computer by copying itself. It corrupts files and modifies them as well.

A worm? Again, exactly as it sounds. And unlike a virus? It is not necessary for it to attach itself on to any kind of existing program. Worms spread rapidly and somehow exploit an operating system. One annoying worm-like scenario is its copying itself to every address book contact. And then sending itself out to every said address book contact. We all know at least one person this has happened to.

A Trojan horse looks like a seemingly harmless piece of information on one’s screen but really is quite harmful. It looks legitimate but is not. And by accidentally installing it and providing pertinent information, a hacker is able to access one’s readily available private information. It’s a sheep disguised in a wolf’s clothing.

The best way to rid oneself of any or all of these three things is to update the operating system on a regular basis and to utilize antivirus software that will expel such enemies
